Staying on top of HVAC maintenance could make a difference in your family’s health as everyone works to slow the spread of COVID-19. No, it is not a guarantee, but the fact is, a clean air filter can make a big difference in supporting the immune systems of everyone living in your home.
Use of strong air filters during allergy and flu season is not new. Many have turned to higher-rated MERV filters to keep air cleaner for family members who struggle with severe allergies or asthma. MERV stands for minimum efficiency reporting value, with values ranging from 1 to 16. The higher the number, the more efficient the filter in trapping airborne particles.
The advantage of MERV filters rated 13 or higher is an efficiency that can trap some airborne viruses and bacteria, along with allergens such as pet dander, mold and pollen. With viruses like COVID-19 and seasonal flu being spread by coughs and sneezes that render the viruses airborne, a filter with this efficiency level can possibly provide additional protection for your family.
MERV 13 filters have NOT been shown to prevent flu or COVID-19, but clean air in your home will help keep your family members healthier and strengthen their immune systems in the event they are exposed to these viruses.
The team at Lew’s Reliable encourages you to change your furnace and air conditioning air filters every month, especially during flu and allergy season, and during this time of uncertainty.
Our technicians also suggest while staying home take some extra time to inspect and prepare your air conditioner for the upcoming season. A thorough inspection now will ensure your AC is ready to keep your home clean and cool when hot weather hits.
Your at-home checklist
Outside:
- Remove leaves and debris that have collected around the outside unit and use a hose to wash down the panels. If something is jammed inside, do not attempt to take the panels off, but call a professional.
- Prune shrubs and trees that are closer than 1 foot from the unit and be sure the base of the unit is open for airflow.
- Check that insulation on the suction line providing a refrigerant to the compressor is in good condition.
Inside:
- Check that the coil drainage hose is in good condition and situated to drain into the drip tray below.
- CHANGE YOUR AIR FILTER.
- Clean supply vents and return grills that may have become clogged with dust and pet hair.
- Turn on your AC to test the system and ensure the air is cool.
- Schedule a seasonal maintenance check with Lew’s Reliable.
The professionals at Lew’s Reliable can identify potential issues with your AC that needs repair or could become an emergency later. Your at-home inspection is a great way to identify concerns you will want to mention to your HVAC technician, but it’s not a substitute for our multi-point service.
